disrupting harmful data extraction
How can data justice protect your community?

Systems of power benefit from our hidden technologies and corporate practices that feed into systems of mass data extraction for profit.
As a community organizer, learning to identify and build strategy around points of data extraction in your community are the first steps to fighting back.
Whether you’re fighting for land back or to end mass incarceration, our current landscape means data and technology are either working for you or against you. You can learn to know the difference.
Points of data extraction are any places where we’re asked to provide information to feed extractive systems. Data collection might look harmless or even beneficial until we investigate how data is being collected, stored, analyzed, and interpreted.
Learn to analyze and understand power dynamics around data systems. First, learn the fundamentals of data justice as a framework and apply those principles to evaluating data systems as a whole. Then, learn how to help communities develop their own unique data values and apply those to specific data-sharing requests or relationships. Finally, learn how to fight back when data is being hidden or extracted without meaningful consent.
